Review: The Christmas Killer (DI James Walker, #1) by Alex Pine

The Christmas Killer The Christmas Killer by Alex Pine
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Note: I received a copy of this book from Harper Collins via Edelweiss+.

As the snow begins to fall, the body count begins to climb… DI James Walker is ready for a quiet family Christmas in the sleepy village of Kirkby Abbey.  But when he opens an early Christmas present left on his doorstep, he soon realizes it is no gift. Inside is a gruesome surprise, and a promise – twelve days, twelve murders. Not long after, the first body is found, half-frozen in the snow.  As the blizzards descend, panic spreads through the remote Cumbrian village – there’s a killer amongst them, and with eleven more victims to go, anyone could be next….

I thought the whole plot and description were interesting when I first decided to request this book.  The main issue I had with the book was that it was pretty repetitive in describing events that had happened and a lot of back and forth with people.  I also correctly assumed who the murderer was pretty early on making the suspense quite lackluster.

Review: The Chalet by Catherine Cooper - ARC

The Chalet The Chalet by Catherine Cooper
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Note: I received an advanced copy of this book from Harper Collins via NetGalley.

In the French Alps in 1998, two friends embark on a skiing trip in the midst of a blizzard. However, only one of them survives, leaving behind unanswered questions.

Twenty years later, four individuals linked to the missing man converge at the same resort. Each harbors a hidden secret, and it's possible that two of them may be implicated in a sinister act. Among them is a potential killer, waiting for the right moment. Someone holds the truth about what truly transpired that fateful day, and they are determined to seek justice. The price for their knowledge will be steep.

This was a really compelling book for me, I was excited by the idea of an unknown murder and how that related to the people vacationing there 20 years later. I also really enjoyed getting the different perspectives from the various guests and how they connected in their past. Fast-paced and very fun to read.

Review: The Bookseller's Secret: A Novel of Nancy Mitford and WWII by Michelle Gable - ARC

The Bookseller's Secret: A Novel of Nancy Mitford and WWII The Bookseller's Secret: A Novel of Nancy Mitford and WWII by Michelle Gable
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Note: I received an advanced copy of this book from Harper Collins via Edelweiss+.

In 1942, London, Nancy Mitford is worried about more than air raids and German spies. Still recovering from a devastating loss, the once sparkling Bright Young Thing is estranged from her husband, her allowance has been cut, and she’s given up her writing career. On top of this, her five beautiful but infamous sisters continue making headlines with their controversial politics.

Eager for distraction and desperate for income, Nancy jumps at the chance to manage the Heywood Hill bookshop while the owner is away at war. Between the shop’s brisk business and the literary salons she hosts for her eccentric friends, Nancy’s life seems on the upswing. But when a mysterious French officer insists that she has a story to tell, Nancy must decide if picking up the pen again and revealing all is worth the price she might be forced to pay.

Eighty years later, Heywood Hill is abuzz with the hunt for a lost wartime manuscript written by Nancy Mitford. For one woman desperately in need of a change, the search will reveal not only a new side to Nancy, but an even more surprising link between the past and present…

I have read quite a number of World War II historical fiction books and I usually get something new and interesting out of them. That was not the case with this book. I also did not relate or even like either of the main characters, they were both selfish.

ARC Review: The Cottage by Lisa Stone

The Cottage The Cottage by Lisa Stone
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Note: I received a copy of this book from Harper Collins via NetGalley.

An isolated cottage… After losing her job and boyfriend, Jan Hamlin is in desperate need of a fresh start. So she jumps at the chance to rent a secluded cottage on the edge of Coleshaw Woods.

A tap at the window… Very quickly though, things take a dark turn. At night, Jan hears strange noises, and faint taps at the window. Something, or someone, is out there.

A forest that hides many secrets… Jan refuses to be scared off. But whoever is outside isn’t going away, and it soon becomes clear that the nightmare is only just beginning…

Wow. I'm not really sure what to say about this one. Reading it alone in my bedroom late at night did give me the creeps. I thought the overall concept was a little weird but I enjoyed the story throughout.
